Brink Preview

"What the hell is it?" That's been the question around team-based shooter Brink for a while now. It's multiplayer but it's single-player. It's like its predecessors Quake Wars and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory but it's totally new. It's a way into online shooting for newcomers but it's hardcore. It's... nope, no idea. Until now.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters Preview

Thursday, 24 March 2011 09:07 Published in Featured

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters has a release date of March 29, 2011. It has a few but important changes that will make the game a great find to new players, especially with the increased focus on a simpler user interface and the addition of caddies. Sometimes, new players of sports games can be put off simply because they often require a deep knowledge of the sport they are replicating. However, the ease of use and assistance for new players will not get in the way for seasoned players.

DC Universe Online Review

Sunday, 09 January 2011 12:51 Published in Reviews
We've spent a fair amount of time with Sony Online Entertainment's upcoming DC Universe Online at various events since it was announced in July 2008. The massively multiplayer online game has typically shown well, although it has yet to make good on its promise to let players live the life of a budding superhero or villain in the DC Comics world. On a recent visit to SOE's Austin studio, we had the chance to play a meaty chunk of the game's opening levels, which included a face-off against Gorilla Grodd. The biggest question weighing on our mind during this most recent demo was whether the game would finally deliver on the promise hinted at since its debut.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising Preview

Thursday, 23 December 2010 10:27 Published in Coming Soon

You always know something exciting is about to happen when Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima takes the stage. He did so to great applause at Microsoft’s 2010 E3 press conference, but he unfortunately didn’t spend much time in front of the audience. He did, however, state that what he was there to show was something new and unique. Kojima also mentioned that just as Metal Gear hero Snake passed the torch to the androgynous Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2, Kojima would now defer to Metal Gear Solid: Rising producer Shigenobu Matsuyama. And with that, Matsuyama took the stage and introduced an intriguing new trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Rising, the upcoming action game featuring a part-cyborg Raiden slicing up some of the freakiest automatons you’ve seen this side of those mooing gekkos from Metal Gear Solid 4.

L.A Noire Preview

Monday, 22 November 2010 10:15 Published in Reviews

When you spend enough time watching an actor in movies or TV, you begin to pick up on subtle and telltale facial expressions--the nervous tics, the knowing grins--that are so nuanced you really only associate such looks with that actor and that actor alone. Video games aren't supposed to let you do that. Our little hobby is one that's been able to stick realistic faces onto static character models for some time now, but it has struggled mightily with showing them talk and express emotions in a way that really reflects the actors providing the voices. But apparently nobody told Rockstar that because the publisher's upcoming 1940's detective-thriller L.A. Noire uses some ambitious new image-capture technology that puts a stark focus on those sort of subtle, nuanced facial expressions to not only drive the game's story, but also the gameplay itself.
