Crysis 2 Review

Friday, 18 February 2011 12:50 Published in Reviews

Any preview of Crysis 2 is invariably going to be torn between two things (or should be, anyway): how it looks, and how it plays. When I checked out a single-player section of the PC version of Crysis 2 a month or so ago, I was struck as much by how well it controlled on a 360 pad as how fantastic that version looked, and I was also left with some serious questions as to how it would run on consoles. Last week, things were switched around a bit as I spent time with Crysis 2's multiplayer on the Xbox 360, and I was struck by two things: how great it looked, and how not so great it played.

Dragon Age II Review

EA and BioWare have shown that there's still room for fun in the dark fantasy world of Dragon Age--at least when it comes to promoting the upcoming sequel. This past summer, they silently introduced Dragon Age II at San Diego Comic-Con with a showing so free of advance warning that it would make the stealthiest of ninjas jealous. That hands-on demo showed a snippet of combat that was markedly bloodier and more over the top than its predecessor, a change that generated quite a lot of questions about the direction of this critically acclaimed role-playing series.

Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty Review

Some sequels radically reinvent what has come before; others simply buff up a formula that already soars. To suggest that Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty does only the latter and not the former would be to sell short the fresh ideas and exciting gameplay that makes this superb real-time strategy sequel so enjoyable. This package delivers more than simple fun--it serves up incredible amounts of variety, from the cinematic and multifaceted campaign to the competitive and tightly balanced multiplayer. You might scoff at the fact that the game only includes a single campaign and, perhaps, at the high price point (the game retails at $59.99; $10 higher than the average PC game). But these are nitpicks, forgivable quibbles in a high-quality game that provides plenty of bang for the buck. Starcraft II is the natural next step for the series: it both embraces and updates the core components that made the first game a huge hit while layering on important features that give the game endless replay value, both online and off. This is one of the finest real-time strategy games in years, and whether you're new to the genre or have been studying Protoss build orders for the past decade, there's something here to delight you.

DC Universe Online Review

Sunday, 09 January 2011 12:51 Published in Reviews
We've spent a fair amount of time with Sony Online Entertainment's upcoming DC Universe Online at various events since it was announced in July 2008. The massively multiplayer online game has typically shown well, although it has yet to make good on its promise to let players live the life of a budding superhero or villain in the DC Comics world. On a recent visit to SOE's Austin studio, we had the chance to play a meaty chunk of the game's opening levels, which included a face-off against Gorilla Grodd. The biggest question weighing on our mind during this most recent demo was whether the game would finally deliver on the promise hinted at since its debut.

Review : Mass Effect 2

Friday, 04 June 2010 11:21 Published in Reviews

Mass Effect is one of my favorite games of the past decade. Despite its technical shortcomings, BioWare's first in what it promised to be a trilogy took the role-playing genre to new cinematic heights. Mass Effect 2 is a better game in near every way. From the very first scene, you will be hooked. And the farther you dive into this epic action role-playing game, the better it gets. It fulfills the promise of its predecessor while continuing to push the boundaries of what we should expect in a videogame.
